Fire Risk Assessment

A fire risk assessment is a systematic evaluation of your premises to identify fire hazards, evaluate the risk of those hazards causing harm, and determine the adequacy of existing fire safety measures. It also provides recommendations for improving fire safety to ensure the protection of occupants and property.

Why do I need a fire risk assessment?

Mandatory Compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, a written Fire Risk Assessment is legally required if you meet any of the following criteria:

  • You are a business with employees: While all businesses must conduct a Fire Risk Assessment, recording it in writing is mandatory if you have five or more employees.

  • You are a landlord.

  • You hold a license to sell or serve alcohol.

Authorities are entitled to request your Fire Risk Assessment during inspections. In the event of a fire or a visit from a fire officer, this document will likely be the first they ask to review. It provides a comprehensive summary of the risks present and the control measures implemented on your premises.

As such, a Fire Risk Assessment should be one of the first fire safety measures you undertake. It serves not only as a compliance document but also as a detailed action plan for addressing potential fire risks and implementing further safety measures as required.
